4 Rules to Get the Perfect Makeup-Outfit Combo

Makeup can be a beautiful expression of ourselves and how we feel. If done right, makeup can elevate our confidence and make us feel like we’re ready to slay the day. If done not-so-right, it might invite attention from others (but not in the good way)

Just like peanut butter and jelly, or McDonald’s French fries and ice cream, there are some tried-and-true makeup-outfit combinations that you can’t go wrong with. These are four easy rules that our makeup artists go by, so use them as a guide to create your own unique look!

1. Makeup should complement, not match

If you’re wearing a bold outfit - loud prints, color blocks, or even bright neon shades, keep your makeup colors more subdued so they highlight the colors and prints in your clothes, instead of overshadowing them.

For instance, if you’re wearing a bright coral dress or top, consider eyeshadow and lipstick in complementary shades. If you’re wearing clothes in more muted colours, like grey, burgundy, or navy blue, then you have more freedom to spice up your makeup colors! Balance is key here, and you always want to be sure the colors complement, not match each other.

2. Add a pop of color

If you’re going for an all black, white, or even nude ensemble, why not add a few bright pieces to your outfit - like a piece of statement jewelry or a pair of brightly colored shoes? Use those accessories as a base to match your makeup to. If you’re sporting a cute pink bag, why not pair it with a lightly dusted pink blush?

Another great idea is to go for a neutral and toned-down makeup look that nicely complements a monochromatic outfit, then opt for a bold lipstick shade like hot red or pink, to give your overall look a nice pop of color that’s sure to turn heads.

3. Focus on one defining feature

If you have big beautiful eyes, flaunt them. If you want to accentuate your gorgeous cheekbones, do that. Whatever facial feature you want to draw attention to, focus on one - and just one. Match the color on that feature with a color in your outfit, whether it’s your handbag, your earrings, or your shoes, then keep the rest of your makeup neutral and complementary.

4. Practice makes perfect

Matching colors and shades is a learning process for all of us. It’s always a trial-and-error journey, but only through experimentation and finding out what works best, can we become experts in creating makeup-outfit combos that’s polished, put-together, and uniquely our own. Don’t be afraid to try new styles and color combinations, and even get a second opinion from your gal pal or mom to see what they think!
