How to Help Your Lash Extensions Last Longer
You love your lash extensions: the volume, the colour, the intensity, and how much they look like natural lashes, only better! So how do you make that fresh-out-of-the salon look last? There are a few things you absolutely must do if you want your lash extensions to last as long as possible.
Take extra care in the first 24-48 hours
The first 24 to 48 hours after getting your lash extensions applied are critical in determining how well they stay on. Although you’ll be ready to leave the salon (or the comfort of your couch if you’ve hired mobile beauty services to treat you at home!) soon after your lashes have been applied, the glue will still take some time to completely set on your natural lashes.
Of course you should avoid rubbing your eyes, but also avoid steam, water, makeup, or serums and creams for at least the first 24 hours. A further 48 hours is best, and even better is if you can avoid these lash-loosening substances as much as possible while you have eyelash extensions.
Avoid mascara (and other eye makeup)
One of the main reasons for getting lash extensions is so you don’t need mascara to achieve thick, luscious lashes. You may not be tempted to add extra drama to your lashes by applying mascara at all! If you must wear it, it’s especially important not to wear waterproof mascara, which is harder to remove than the water-based variety. Rubbing your eyes vigorously to remove eye makeup will certainly dislodge some lashes.
It’s also wise to minimise your use of other eye makeup, like eyeshadow and eyeliner. A little bit is likely to be fine, but remove it carefully with an oil-free remover. In general, avoid face creams and serums that are rich and oily, and don’t put them close to your eyes.
Sleep on your back
Sleep on your back to avoid putting pressure on the eye area at night. This might not always be possible as we’re not usually conscious of how we sleep once we’re out! But try to fall asleep on your back and turn onto your back if you do wake up and become aware of your position.
Some people find sleeping on their back more comfortable if they place a pillow beneath their knees as this relieves pressure on their lower back. Sleeping on your back is not generally advised during pregnancy, especially the later stages, so do be aware of your own physical limitations when it comes to this lash care tip.
Maintain your extensions with touch-ups
The first set of extensions will last between 3 to 5 weeks, depending on how well you take care of them and the speed at which your natural lashes regenerate. To maximise the life of extensions and avoid having to go back for an entire new set too soon, get a touch-up after a couple of weeks, or when needed. This will add new lashes only where you need them, to fill in any gaps. Mobile beauty services provided by The First Refresh are especially handy as you don’t have to take much time out of your day for a refill.
